Word count versus character count

Use the destination's measurement

An essay may restrict words while a form restricts characters or encoded bytes. These are not interchangeable. Paste the exact selection you plan to submit, including headings and footnotes only when the destination counts them.

Hello world! has two words, twelve characters including its space, and eleven with whitespace excluded. Punctuation contributes to character totals but does not become a word on its own.

Know how these counters work

Word Counter groups letters and numbers, allowing internal apostrophes, periods, and hyphens when surrounded by letters or numbers. A hyphenated term can count as one word. This is a deterministic token rule, not a language-aware dictionary.

Character Counter uses JavaScript UTF-16 code units after line endings are normalized to a single newline. Many emoji occupy two or more units. No spaces removes all whitespace, including tabs and line breaks, not just ordinary spaces.

Resolve disagreements before submission

Set Character limit to match the receiving field. Limit left can become negative; the tool reports overage instead of silently truncating the draft. The receiving system may count visible symbols or bytes differently, so check its own validation.

For languages without spaces between words, treat word totals cautiously. Use the destination's native rules rather than assuming an English-style boundary rule fits every language.

Worked example

Hello world!

Hello world!

The text stays unchanged. Statistics show 12 characters, 11 without whitespace, two words, and zero characters left.

Character limit:

12
