Formatting cleanup is not rewriting, humanizing, or fact checking
Choose the right review for copied AI output instead of confusing clean presentation with reliable content.
Identify the type of change
Formatting changes presentation: visible Markdown markers, repeated spaces, or accidental line wraps. Rewriting changes wording. Fact checking tests a claim against evidence. Those are separate activities, and a passage can succeed at one while failing at another.
These local cleanup tools apply explicit string operations. They do not ask a model to write a replacement paragraph. A well-formatted output can preserve an incorrect date perfectly. A matching reference count says nothing about whether the cited article supports the argument.
Avoid false promises about authorship
There is no authorship assessment in the cleaner. Removing a zero-width character or a bold marker does not prove that a person wrote a passage, remove a demonstrated universal watermark, or guarantee a detector's result. The same formatting artifacts occur in human-authored Markdown.
If your school, publisher, employer, or client has an AI-use policy, follow that policy and disclose assistance where required. Formatting a draft does not change the origin of its ideas, create permission to use someone else's work, or resolve an attribution requirement.
Use two distinct reviews
First clean only the presentation you need for the destination. Read the diff, confirm significant numbers and links, and keep code unchanged. Then review accuracy, source support, tone, attribution, and whether each commitment is yours to make.
If you revise wording after cleanup, compare that new draft with the cleaned version. A text comparison makes additions and removals visible; it still cannot decide whether a sentence is true. Keep the original until both reviews are complete.
